A Kleindiek nano-positioning stage let Twente scan confocal Raman maps registered to SEM images — reading the mineral and protein chemistry of bone non-destructively.

The authors combine confocal Raman spectroscopy with scanning electron microscopy to map both the ultrastructure and the chemistry of bone matrix at high resolution, without destroying the sample. A Kleindiek nanometre scanning stage, driven under LabVIEW, rasters the specimen to build Raman images at chosen frequencies, which are then correlated with the SEM view of the very same region.
