SemCam
An in-chamber CCD camera that watches the probe approach from the side — land tips in under thirty seconds.

A side-on view where the SEM only offers top-down#
The SemCam is a small CCD camera that mounts inside the SEM chamber — on its own or alongside an MM3A-EM manipulator system. Its own light source and a field of view of about 3 mm let it watch the approaching tip from the side, where the SEM itself can only look straight down. That side-on view removes the guesswork a top-down, bird’s-eye image leaves behind.
Landing tips in under thirty seconds#
With the descent visible in profile rather than inferred from above, a probe tip can be brought down onto the sample and confirmed on contact directly — typically in under thirty seconds.
