Amplitude Response of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Probe with Controlled Length during Tapping Mode Atomic Force Microscopy

Carbon-nanotube AFM probes built to controlled length on a Kleindiek MM3A revealed how tube length governs their tapping-mode response.
Multi-walled carbon-nanotube AFM probes are fabricated with controlled length by attaching a tube to a silicon AFM tip with a Kleindiek MM3A nanomanipulator inside the SEM. The authors then study the probes’ tapping-mode amplitude–distance behaviour, observing characteristic effects — amplitude jump-to-zero, post-contact rebounds and large retraction hysteresis — that change systematically with nanotube length and tilt angle.
