Forging of metallic nano-objects for the fabrication of submicron-size components

J. Rösler, D. Mukherji, K. Schock, S. Kleindiek

Highlight

Inside the SEM, four MM3A-EM manipulators acted as hammer and anvil while TU Braunschweig and Kleindiek forged metal nano-objects into submicron components.

The authors demonstrate true forging at the nanoscale. Cube-shaped metallic nanoparticles (300–500 nm) grown from alloys are isolated from powder inside the SEM, where four MM3A-EM manipulators arranged at right angles act as handling tools, hammer and anvil to plastically shape free-standing submicron components — a route to objects that are otherwise very hard to fabricate.
