A microdiffraction set-up for nanoporous metal–organic-framework-type solids

At the ESRF, a Kleindiek MM3A served as a micro-goniometer — holding crystals just micrometres across so synchrotron microdiffraction could solve metal–organic-framework structures.

Solving the atomic structure of metal–organic frameworks is limited by their tiny crystals. The authors build a synchrotron microdiffraction set-up in which a piezo MM3A micromanipulator, combined with a low-wobble air-bearing spindle, acts as a micro-goniometer carrying a magnetic-base sample support — aligning micrometre-sized MOF crystals to about 1 µm so their full structures can be determined.
