The Very Low Shear Modulus of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Determined Simultaneously with the Axial Young’s Modulus via in situ Experiments

By resonating individual nanotubes on a Kleindiek nanoprobe, Peking University measured the surprisingly low shear modulus of multi-walled carbon nanotubes — alongside their axial stiffness.

Using in-situ resonance experiments inside the SEM with a Kleindiek nanoprobe, the authors determine the axial Young’s modulus and the shear modulus of individual multi-walled carbon nanotubes at the same time. They find the inter-wall shear modulus to be very low — far below the axial modulus — a direct mechanical signature of the weak coupling between the concentric walls.
