A stomatin-domain protein essential for touch sensation in the mouse

Without the protein SLP3, mouse skin cannot feel touch normally — mechanically gated currents recorded as a Kleindiek Nanomotor indented sensory neurons.

The authors identify stomatin-like protein 3 (SLP3) as essential for touch sensation in mice: about a third of skin mechanoreceptors fall silent in SLP3-mutant animals, and SLP3 is required for mechanically activated currents in sensory neurons. Those currents are evoked by indenting neurons with a probe driven by a Kleindiek Nanomotor, tying a single molecule to mammalian mechanosensation.
