A lathe under the beam#

The RoTip bolts a rotational axis onto the MM3A-EM — a fourth degree of freedom that turns the manipulator into a miniature lathe under the ion or electron beam. A standard tungsten probe tip seats in the front of the axis and spins continuously, through 360°, in steps of 0.1° — fine enough for true FIB lathe milling, backside milling, and EFTEM, 3D and high-resolution mapping.

Two grams, then it disappears#

The rotational head weighs 2 g, is 32 mm long and 4 mm in diameter — light enough that it adds negligible mass to the MM3A-EM’s own positioning, and it turns with 0.01 mNm of torque. Fit it with the MGS2 microgripper instead of a bare tip and you can grip an object, then rotate it under the beam to present any face to the detector or the ion column — useful for tomography series or STEM imaging that needs more than one viewing angle. Your existing micromanipulator system can be quickly and easily upgraded for use with the RoTip.
