Microdissection means cutting a target structure, a chromosome or a small region of tissue, with a sharp glass needle. It is a test of control: the needle has to be placed exactly on the target, drawn cleanly through it, and stopped before it does collateral damage. A highly precise micromanipulator fitted with such a needle makes this routine, and the cut can be followed step by step under the microscope.
